"Tomorrow Never Knows" & the Tibetan Book of the Dead

John Lennon wrote "Tomorrow Never Knows," the last track on Revolver, in January 1966. The song has been described by music critic, Richie Unterberger of Allmusic, as "the most experimental and psychedelic track on Revolver, in both its structure and production."
[Source] Some have claimed that the song was written under the influence of the psycho-chemical warfare agent, LSD, and was meant to describe an acid trip. However, the "LSD angle" appears to be a misinterpretation of the song. A re-examination of the song and lyrics reveals that "Tomorrow Never Knows" is actually quite metaphysical. It is describing what one experiences after death.

In the 1960s, prominent Indian yogis began travelling to the West to disseminate their knowledge. The Beatles met Swami Vishnu-Devananda, the founder of Sivandana Yoga, while filming "Help!" in the Bahamas in 1965. Swami gave the lads copies of his book, "The Illustrated Book of Yoga." George Harrison began studying yoga and Eastern religion, and in 1966, he traveled to India to study sitar with Ravi Shankar. [Source]

Harrison's interest in Eastern mysticism appears to have influenced Lennon. According to Peter Brown, the lyrics of "Tomorrow Never Knows" are based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead, also known as Liberation Through Hearing During the Intermediate State and the Bardo Thodol. The text is said to have been composed in the 8th century by Padmasambhava and re- discovered in the 12th century. (Evans-Wentz (1960), p. liv; and, Fremantle and Trungpa (2003), p. xi).

The Bardo Thodol describes what the consciousness experiences after death. The time after death and the interval between death and the next rebirth is known in Tibetan as the bardo, or "liberation." (Fremantle (2001: p.21)). This idea of liberation is related to bodhi in Sanskrit, which means awakening, understanding, or enlightenment. It is also related to nirvana, which means the end of illusion. The Bardo Thodol is recited by Tibetan Buddhist lamas over a dying or recently deceased person "in order for them to recognize the nature of their mind and attain liberation from the cycle of rebirth" [Source]. "Since the deceased's awareness is in confusion of no longer being connected to a physical body, it needs help and guidance in order that enlightenment and liberation occurs. The Bardo Thodol teaches how [one] can attain Nirvana by recognizing the heavenly realms instead of entering into the lower realms where the cycle of birth and rebirth continue." [Source]
The first bardo comes at the very moment of death, when there dawns the Clear Light of the Ultimate Reality. This is the very content and substance of the state of liberation, if only the soul can recognize it and act in a way to remain in that state. The instructions intended to be read at the moment of the person's death are designed to help him do this. He is told, first of all, to embrace this supreme experience not in a selfish and egoistic way but rather with love and compassion for all sentient beings. This will aid him in the second step, which is to realize that his own mind and self is identical with the Clear Light, implying that he himself IS the Ultimate Reality, "the All-good Buddha", transcending time, eternity, and all creation. If he can recognize this while in this supreme state at the moment of death, he will attain liberation-that is, he will remain in the Clear Light forever. This condition is called the "Dharmakaya", the highest spiritual body of the Buddha. [Source]
The lyrics of "Tomorrow Never Knows" describe the period after death when the consciousness is liberated.

Turn off your mind, relax and float down stream It is not dying

The consciousness does not die when the physical body dies.

Lay down all thought Surrender to the void It is shining
That you may see the meaning of within It is being
That love is all and love is everyone It is knowing

In the Tibetan Book of the Dead, the "void" is Reality, the All-Good (Source). It is not nothingness, but rather is "intellect itself, unobstructed, shining, thrilling, and blissful, is the very consciousness, the All-good Buddha." (Id.) The text describes own's own "consciousness, not formed into anything, in reality void, and the intellect, shining and blissful,-these two,-are inseparable. The union of them is the Dharma-Kaya state of Perfect Enlightenment. (Id.) One's "own consciousness, shining, void, and inseparable from the Great Body of Radiance, hath no birth, nor death, and is the Immutable Light-Buddha Amitabha." (Id.)

That ignorance and hate may mourn the dead It is believing

The ignorant mourn the dead. They do not understand the opportunity death offers. It is a chance to be liberated from the cycle of birth, death, and re-birth.

But listen to the color of your dreams It is not living

"The Bardo Thodol teaches that once awareness is freed from the body, it creates its own reality as one would experience in a dream." (Source) This state is not living, it is not dying. It is simply being.

Or play the game existence to the end of the beginning

If a soul does not attain liberation, s/he will be drawn back into the cycle of birth and death.

As I have stated in the past, I do not believe the Beatle pushed the LSD agenda. I feel that this song has been falsely interpreted in order to make it seem as though the Beatles promoted LSD. I hope this re-interpretation will help shed Light on what I believe Lennon and the other Beatles were trying to accomplish: using songs to educate and enlighten others to raise consciousness.

  1. interesting read. i honestly wish i knew how the beatles found LSD. when i read the Cynthia Lennon book "John", she mentioned that John found LSD through a couple of 'friends'; although she never mentioned these 'friends' in the previous chapters. it really boggles me.. =/

  2. Its nice to know that it was the Beatles who started the exploration of Hinduism and not the Featles (SPLHCB) MI5 creation.

    Thanks Tina,

  5. thanks, the voice analysis is very interesting.
your avaitar pretty much nails it, it looks like a different guy. i've also come the the conclusion, after 911, that sir faul is a sheep herder for the illuminati

  6. Hi Tina, just thought I'd let you know I was talking about Paul McCartney to a friend of mine the other day, who's a Psychologist of Music with years of experience working with professional musicians. He'd never heard of PID, but said it has been a point of great debate amongst the most eminent music professionals for decades of how the obvious compositional genius of Paul McCartney suddenly and abruptly disappeared in the late 60s. He said this is completely atypical as usually composers of Paul's level get better, and it is almost unheard of for them to decline so much and so quickly.

Just thought I'd mention this, to show that even qualified professionals, who know nothing of so-called 'conspiracy theories', still know there's something very, very strange going on.

  7. Hey PM! Great Great Work!

im so glad i found your blog at the right time!

i have a query/request. i heard people say that one can hear if not 3 then at least 2 Paul-like voices in the various songs sung by 'him'.

is it possible for you to make a list of all of the songs sung by 'him'? and which ones you think were sung by paul, paul 2 or faul? that would really help me, and maybe others too!

all in all, a great blog.
    thank you for this! :)

that's an excellent point. about the drop in quality after 1966. after Here There and Everywhere, where is the great Paul ballad? Where is the ethereal voice of that performance? there was a thread on Paul is Dead Miss Him forum 'who wrote the Beatles music'? I reject the Adorno theory for absolute lack of evidence. and have settled on Margaret Asher as a likely influencer in Paul's rapid development. I figure, he lived in her house, she was a professional musician well trained in composition, theory etc a music teacher turned housewife . Then she has Paul McCartney as a three year house guest- an untutored prodigy, a natural, every teachers dream- clay for molding. It's reported she gave him informal lessons and taught him the recorder. I'm speculating, but I think she is the one who took Paul to the next level in compositional excellence. And some of those compositions got sung by her son.

i think the request from anonymous above is a great idea! something like this would really help many make up their minds about which side they are on.

  10. Eddy, I agree about the Theodore Adorno claim. So, some dusty old German philosopher is publishing his philosophy books AND writing top hits for all the hot new acts? I don't think so. And did Adorno just happen to stop writing music for the Beatles at the same time Paul disappeared? B/c the music changes - & not for the better.

That's an interesting theory on Margaret Asher & makes sense. I hope you will contribute to that thread on PID MH :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. @ Eddy, thanks - and a very interesting, and wholly plausible, theory about Margaret Asher. People with her kind of qualification - professional musicians and composers - should be more prominent voices on the issue of 'Paul McCartney', as I'm sure they would all attest that - unless some sort of serious neurological damage took place - that's almost certainly not the same person.

On a side note, when 'Paul' got married again recently, I saw one of the fawning media stories about it, and the very first reader comment underneath was: "You know, the more I see of this man, the more I believe the replacement theories - because he looks nothing like the mop-top who was in The Beatles!"

I really get the sense we're getting closer and closer to the point where people are just not going to fall for this anymore - let's hope so.

  12. Is there a connection between George Martin and Margaret Asher, I think it was a musical school ?

  13. "You know, the more I see of this man, the more I believe the replacement theories - because he looks nothing like the mop-top who was in The Beatles!" > they should have kept Faul in remote Scotland out of the public eye. Too much exposure is giving the game away. lol

  15. It's also interesting to note that Faul (not Paul) around the time of Anthology claimed that TNK was an LSD song. Which as a sidenote, PAUL made the special effects with special tape loops and such. He was very interested in cutting edge technology. In other words, these inspirations were NOT brought about by psycho-chemical warfare agents.

Seems as silly as when the same time Faul also said that "Got to get you into my life" is about cannabis, which is REAAALLLY pushing it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. ^ Yeah, it's sad. It's just revisionist history to make the Beatles drug-pushers retroactively rather than crediting them w/ being very spiritual & talented musicians.

  22. Okay, I've been on the PID section of wikipedia. I clicked on the view history button and it seems a LOT of things have been removed due to "vandalism" (in quotes). Looking at the teeny section on the 2009 Wired Italia findings, the page no longer says that the photos studied were concluded not to be the same person. HMMMMMMMM.... Somebody's been hard at work. Kind of like how when anybody dares question Obama's validity, "things" happen.

    1. Wikipedia's dispute resolution mechanism is rigged as it's voluntary and non-binding, and most of the admins are ultra-orthodox, and they watch the articles like hawks so if there is a correction they immediately revert it. So there are some good articles to give it legitimacy, mixed in with propaganda and mud-slinging pieces totally in violation of it's own principles, which are a complete joke because they're not followed. I sometimes call it Wackypedia, the Freemason Encyclopedia.

  23. Luckily, the Wired article has been saved elsewhere:

  26. Hi Tina,What year did Faul meet Linda Mccartney?, ive found a date they met was 1967 and they married in 1969, is this right?

She must have 100% known he was a double.

    ReplyDelete
  27. ^ Yes, they met in 1967 during some press conference for Sgt. Pepper.

There are tapes, however, that Faul paid some guy off for during his divorce from Heather. They are known to contain Linda's accounts of life with Faul. Maybe they contain some information that's being hidden from public eye?

  29. Check out this indirect quote from Wikipedia...

"The Beatles changed the way people listened to popular music and experienced its role in their lives. From what began as the Beatlemania fad, the group grew to be perceived by their young fans across the industrialized world as the representatives, even the embodiment, of ideals associated with cultural transfiguration. As icons of the 1960s counterculture, they became a catalyst for bohemianism and activism in various social and political arenas, fuelling such movements as radical feminism, drug experimentation, and the religion of environmentalism."

    -------------

So people don't think that that artists such as the Beatles were/are being used to transform society? Just look at the "fruits".
